Bowie County is a county located in the U.S. state of Texas. It is part of the Texarkana, Texas - Texarkana, Arkansas Metropolitan Statistical Area. As of 2000, the population was 89,306. Its county seat is Boston. Bowie is named for James Bowie, the legendary knife fighter who died at the Battle of the Alamo. Bowie County is one of 46 prohibition or entirely dry counties in the state of Texas. However, the community of Texarkana straddles the state line with Arkansas, and the Arkansas side is in Miller County which is wet. State Line Avenue runs directly north and south through Texarkana, literally riding on the state line; thus there are numerous liquor stores on the Arkansas (east) side of the avenue, and none on the Texas (west) side.
